Local Youth Pastor Accused Of Sexual Deviance: Grand Blanc's Curtis Burkhardt Previously Convicted Of Indecent Exposure
POSTED: 1:36 pm EST November 29, 2010
UPDATED: 1:49 pm EST November 30, 2010GRAND BLANC, Mich. -- A voluntary youth pastor at the First Baptist Church in Grand Blanc was arrested and charged with indecent exposure for an alleged act committed on a child in August.
Curtis Burkhardt, 43, of Grand Blanc, was taken into custody on Nov. 22 after police investigated claims that he had exposed himself to a child at an area campground.
Detective Dale Brown, with the Brandon Township substation of the Oakland Co Sheriff’s Office, said he received a fax from the Grand Blanc Police Department which indicated that in August, Burkhardt took a group of neighborhood children to the Clearwater Campground in Brandon Township without prior approval from their parents.
Oakland County Undersheriff Michael G. McCabe said Burkhardt had a sexually toned conversation with an 11-year-old female victim while at the campground.
During this conversation, McCabe said Burkhardt was asking the young girl if she had ever seen male genitalia and asked questions regarding her older sister’s sexual activity. McCabe said the victim reported Burkhardt had an erection during this conversation.
Later in the day, while having lunch at the campground, authorities said Burkhardt insisted the victim sit next to him while he had his own five-year-old daughter on his lap. McCabe said at this point, he exposed his genitalia to the victim. Police said when the victim arrived home, she reported the incident to her sister, who in turn told their parents.
McCabe said their investigation revealed that Burkhardt had exposed himself to the victim’s older sister, who is 16 years old now, during an occasion when she was babysitting for the Burkhardt’s. Police said she was 13-14 years old at the time and that he would also try to get the sister to model her bathing suit for him.
Burkhardt was arraigned in District Court in Independence Township and his bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety with no 10% allowed.
Additionally, police said Burkhardt was ordered to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18, including his own children, and was outfitted with a GPS tether after posting bond the night of his arrest.
McCabe said Burkhardt was previously charged and convicted of indecent exposure in 2001 when the victim from that case indicates Burkhardt exposed his genitalia to her and her three-year-old daughter while at the McDonald’s in Grand Blanc.
On Tuesday, the First Baptist Church of Grand Blanc released this statement concerning Burkhardt:
On behalf of myself and our church members, we were sad to hear of the charges against Mr. Burkhardt, but must let the matter work its way through the criminal justice system to a just conclusion.
Mr. Burkhardt is a member of our church. He is not now, nor has ever been on staff at First Baptist Church. He is not now, nor has he ever been a youth pastor here. As a member, Mr. Burkhardt has been involved in many aspects of the church, as are numerous members. The campground event mentioned in the media was not a church-sponsored event or activity. First Baptist Church has closely-followed risk management policies in place for each of our church-sponsored programs.
This concludes my comments at this time.
